Day Z+1 of: “Deco & Marie eats Malaysia!” Final post I promise. Last day back in KL for 24hours before returning home to beans on toast for the next 6 months. Another recommendation from the Michelin bible close to our hotel. Anak Baba and another flavorful Laksa. Loving the subtle heat in these not too spicy. Certainly a hearty dish that wouldn’t go a miss if you’d a cold or flu! Next up was their popiah spring roll – savoury roll in a soft popiah wrap. @katie.carey.564 here we had some more Ayam Goreng marinated in turmeric.. well tasty. Then Marie has some fried fish covered in chili sambal. Too spicy for me… and too fishy! 🤮
Day Z of “Deco eats Malaysia!… and so does Marie”. This could be the end, despite having 5 or so more days here in Malaysia – Leaving Penang today heading to the island of Lankawi, but we’ve pretty much eaten everything on our list of. The day started by meeting one of my hero’s on the streets of Penang, Optimus Prime. Himself and bumblebee like to hang out here in Georgetown as they go largely un-noticed by the locals. Lunch was another recommendation from the bible – 888 Hokkien Mee. Noodles in a deep red prawn soup with sweet umami flavours with some added roasted pork and tea egg. Later that day, the last 2 remaining items to tick off the list. Char kuey teow (which we’d already sampled in KL, but were told it was better here) and Satay skewers. In between heavy downpours we managed to get both at the Chulia St Hawkers market. Both were 🤤. On the stroll home, passing through a mid-autumn festival market near the hotel, Marie sample what can only be described as a spring roll puff pastry pie…
Day x of y of “Deco eats Malaysia! …and so does Marie!” After spending a few hours getting our Buddhism on up at the Kek Lok Si Temple the stroll down landed us in Air Itam where we ate at a road side Cai Fan or Economy Rice- a pick n’mix of food served with rice. Pork, beef, fried chicken and all the curry sauces – delicious and extraordinary flavors! Afternoon was then spent on Penang hill where one was treated to an ice cream. Dinner was yet again more Penang specialties: first up Wonton Mee from Mother and Son wonton mee, a stall that has been here for nearly 50years! As we were sharing this dish (as we did with most) it was like that scene from the cartoon lady and the tramp! Next we tried the Nasi Kandar that was a recommendation from our Grab (Uber) driver on the way to airport in KL. A mix of tender meats, spices and flavorful curries – all on one plate. An explosion of flavors for the taste buds. #noandrexrequired
Day 4 of “Deco eats Malaysia! – and so does Marie”. Moved cities for this one and now up in Georgetown, Penang, trying out some of the Michelin recommendations for lunch – first up being My Own Cafe – who literally only have 3 things on the menu… so we had all 3 first up was the Lemak Laksa… fragrant flavors in coconut milk broth. The other being a delicious Asam Laksa, with their own crispy vegetable spring rolls dipped into each laksa for added nyomage! Next up were beef and lamb samosa from Penang famous Samosa. Later for dinner tried out some hawker stalls for some bbq duck and char siew pork, whilst Marie opted for an oyster omelette. Finally we shared what is the national dish here, a Nasi Lemak with crispy chicken and some bao’s. 🤤
Day 3 of Deco eats Malaysia, is not all about me for once. Started off for lunch at Lai Foong Lala Noodles – well Marie did cos this was a lala clam noodle dish that Marie love… I was like 🤮. I ended up getting more Pani Puri and samosas elsewhere. Back to Jalan Alor for dinner starting out at Cu Cha for their Char kuey teow – very flavor some and not too dissimilar to pad Thai. While there was mesmerized by their cooking of the chicken wings just had to try some. Lastly finished off at Dino’s Thai for some buttered prawns and a coconut Mr slushy. Finishing the evening off with some cocktails. Next up: George Town, Penang #noandrexneeded
Day 2 of Deco eats Malaysia!! Started with lunch before our time slot to go view the Petronas towers with the national dish of Malaysia – nasi lemak. Later on visiting Jakob Alor food street sample some delish Pani Puri, finishing up at KL’s oldest Chinese for the signature Pei Pa crispy duck and some bbq & roast pork 🤤🤤
Welcome to “Deco eats Malaysia!!” – Starting off with Chinatown in Kuala Lumpur. First up Hong Kee clay pot chicken rice. Followed by prawn dim sum and fried chicken dumplings from Mee Tarik #foodporn #muchnyomage
I think I’ve found a safe space for me in cork city! #anmhíabu
Down for the homecoming – and then back home to Dublin!
